Echium plantagineum, known as purple purple viper’s bugloss, is a hairy plant with large leaves and flowers that start out red and later change to purple-blue. It is quite common in Greece and usually grows near the sea and particularly on the island of Syros, in barren and dry areas such as Vari, Fabrika, and other places. Oil extracted from its seeds is used in food and cosmetics. However, purple viper’s-bugloss produces a toxin that causes chronic liver damage in domestic animals when they graze on it and consume it in large quantities, especially horses, which may even die from it.

Το Echium plantagineum, γνωστό ως βοϊδόγλωσσα, είναι ένα χνουδωτό φυτό με μεγάλα φύλλα και με άνθη που ξεκινούν με κόκκινο χρώμα που αλλάζει σε μωβ-μπλε. Είναι αρκετά κοινό στην Ελλάδα και συνηθώς ζει κοντά στη θάλασσα και συγκεκριμένα στη Σύρο σε άγονες και ξηρές θέσεις στη Βάρη, Φάμπρικα και σε άλλα μέρη. Το έλαιο από τους σπόρους του χρησιμοποιείται στο φαγητό και σε καλλυντικά. Αλλά η βοϊδόγλωσσα παράγει μια τοξίνη που προκαλεί χρόνιες βλάβες στο συκώτι των οικόσιτων ζώων όταν βόσκουν και το τρώνε σε μεγάλες ποσότητες, ειδικά στα άλογα τα οποία μπορεί ακόμα και να πεθάνουν από αυτό.
