Asphodelus ramosus, belongs to the family Liliaceae (Liliaceae) and is distributed throughout the Mediterranean region, as well as throughout Greece (there are also 3 other species in Greece: A. albus, A. fistulosus, A. tenuifolius). The stem branches at the apex. The flower petals are white with an elongated vein in the middle, purple or partly purple in colour. It flowers from January to April. Asphodel has a great ability to cope with drought, high temperatures and even low soil moisture. The term "asphodel desert" has been used to describe asphodel-dominated ecosystems that are considered desert or semi-arid systems. In Greek mythology, asphodelos is associated with the dead and the underworld. Homer in the Odyssey mentions that the souls of the dead in Hades went to an 'asphodelon lichen' where they were nourished by its tuberous roots.

Ο Ασφόδελος ή σπερδούκλα (επιστ. ονομ. Asphodelus ramosus), ανήκει στην οικογένεια Liliaceae (Λειριοειδή) και κατανέμεται σ’ όλη την περιοχή της Μεσογείου, καθώς και σ’ όλη την Ελλάδα (υπάρχουν επίσης άλλα 3 είδη στην Ελλάδα: A. albus, A. fistulosus, A. tenuifolius). Ο βλαστός διακλαδίζεται στην κορυφή. Τα πέταλα του άνθους είναι λευκά με μια επιμήκη νεύρωση στη μέση, χρώματος μοβ ή μερικώς μοβ. Ανθίζει από Ιανουάριο μέχρι Απρίλιο. Ο ασφόδελος έχει μεγάλη ικανότητα να αντιμετωπίζει την ξηρασία, τις υψηλές θερμοκρασίες ακόμη και τις χαμηλές εδαφικές υγρασίες. Ο όρος «έρημος ασφοδέλων» έχει χρησιμοποιηθεί προκειμένου να χαρακτηρίσει τα οικοσυστήματα που κυριαρχούνται από ασφόδελους και θεωρούνται ως ερημοποιημένα ή ημιερημικά συστήματα. Στην ελληνική μυθολογία ο ασφόδελος συνδέεται με τους νεκρούς και τον κάτω κόσμο. Ο Όμηρος στην Οδύσσεια αναφέρει ότι οι ψυχές των νεκρών στον Άδη πήγαιναν σε «ασφοδελόν λειμώνα» όπου και τρέφονταν με τις κονδυλώδεις ρίζες του.
